The Passing Years

The bright afternoon fades into a hazy dusk
like the flame fading into a flicker
only the last leaves of an old tree
flutter unsteadily in the evening breeze.

The lovely songs of the earth float in the air
the purple sky paints lovely shadows
Longing for the yesteryears bloom
plunging one into the reminiscences of the past.
To sleep peacefully forever, deep in the earth
is the longing within the heart
The time flows quiet
taking with it bits of life.

The rosary slips, the cane falls
the flicker dies out into the darkness
slowly silence envelopes the earthly life
bringing with it eternal peace and calm.

Reflections

 

On mirrors or minds?
Of images or events?
Belonging to a forgotten past
or an obscure future?

Rays of thoughts
fall on the mirrors of life
unknowingly or knowingly
springs up a thousand images.

Mistakes? Images felt dusty
Rights? They beautify
eyes fall for the mirages
a patient mind for the dusty reflections.

AKAVOOR VASUDEVAN NAMBOODIRIPAD (1878 - 1952)

Vasudevan Namboodiripad of Akavoor Mana, popularly known as "Valiya Thampuraan" was a poet and a scholar in "Jyothisham", "Darsanams" and the "Puranams". He had memorized the entire Mahaabhaaratham. Although he had written a large number of poems, he had only two collections of poems - "Sreekrishna Sthuthi" and "Bhakthi Lahari". "Krishnopahaaram" (1949) is mostly prose, and contains also his own translation of a part of "Naaraayanopanishad".

What is it like to be born into a family with a great lineage? I have pondered on this question many a time and it brings mixed feelings of pride and humility. The rich tradition makes me proud; its greatness makes me humble.

Akavoor Vasudevan Namboodiripad was my grandfather's grandfather..........My grandfather still cherishes the days he spent with his grandfather at "Murajapam" held in the erstwhile Travancore State now Thiruvananthapuram hosted by the Royal family of Travancore.
